The Curtis Cup match at St Louis Country Club, Missouri is just weeks away and the battle for places heats up at the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon this coming weekend, Friday to Sunday, April 25-27.
The GB and I Curtis Cup team of eight will be announced on May 6. This is the last event for contenders to improve their position in the Women's World Amateur Rankings and the Ladies Golf Union Order of Merit, from which six of the side will automatically gain selection.
It is 12 years since the prestigious event had a home winner – Heather Stirling in 2002 – but this year’s strong Scottish line-up includes Scottish champion Alyson McKechin (Eldersie), the 2013 SLGA Order of Merit winner Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and a host of up and coming youngsters.
Connie Jaffrey, the SLGA’s 2013 Girls’ Order of Merit and the Scottish girls’ champion, is a Troon member and will be sure to gain the local support.
McKechin came close to ending the long home drought last year when she finished joint second behind English winner, Olivia Winning. It catapulted the Renfrewshire player towards success in the “Scottish” the following month at Longniddry.
The "Helen Holm" has attracted players from all around the globe – Venezuela, Switzerland, Germany, France, Slovenia but the GB and Ireland players will be desperate to claim the trophy and stake a claim for a place in in the eight-strong GB and I Curtis Cup squad that will be determined to emulate the famous 2012 victory at Nairn and stage a successful defence of the Curtis Cup from June 6-8.
Among the England entries is Alex Peters (Notts Ladies), who topped the 2013 English Order of Merit, while Wales’ Chloe Williams is one of the backmarkers with a + 3.7 handicap.
From Ireland, Olivia Mahaffey arrives at Troon fresh from a successful defence of the Irish Under-18 Open Championship, while 15-year-old Irish girls champion Julie McCarthy is back in Scotland just a couple of weeks after she won the SLGA’s Under-16 Open Strokeplay Championship at Strathmore.
