KRAFT NABISCO HOTTING UP TO A TREMENDOUS CLIMAX
From Joyce Hunnam, our Special correspondent at the Kraft Nabisco....
It's the final day of the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills, Rancho Mirage, California...who will win the first major of the ladies season? There is certainly an intriguing, fit-for-television leaderboard with two Americans, Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie, leading the way. However, Britain will be well represented with Charley Hull and Catriona Matthew following immediately behind in the 2nd and 3rd groups respectively. Chuck into the mix former major winners Se Ri Pak, Cristie Kerr and Stacy Lewis and a whole raft of other experienced players all loitering with intent to dive into Poppie's Pond at the end of today.
The final round of the 'Dinah' will be all about the young guns versus the experience campaigners. The two teenagers Lexi and Charley are heading into unknown territory, not knowing what it is like to play in the final groups on the final day of a major golf event. Whilst Catriona and Se Ri will be using all they experience they have gained to get them over the finishing line at Mission Hills.
Meanwhile, Michelle Wie is aiming to finally shake off her demons and land a win in America, and BIG win at that! Since she was aged 13 she has been touted as the being the player who will dominate ladies golf for years and years but she has failed to deliver. The American golf world obsession with Michelle is off the chart, almost Tiger-like. She is among the best-known golfers in America but has yet to win an LPGA event on home soil. The girl clearly has talent but does she have the mental toughness to finally become a major winner? We will know the answer later today.
Catriona Matthew is playing great golf. I have watched almost every ball she has hit this week and she looks so calm and in control, and interestingly but not surprisingly, not many of golf's media are picking up on Catriona's performances. She is like stealth bomber, no one pays attention to her until it's too late and if I were any player ahead of her on the leaderboard I would be looking in my rear view mirror and keeping an eye on her.
And what about no-fear Charley Hull? She is an amazing talent and such a level-headed young person. If Charley wins today she will become the youngest ever winner of a ladies major golf event. And nothing would surprise me with this kid, she is more than capable of taking away the limelight from her American counterparts.
Today's final round of the last-ever Kraft Nabisco Championshipis is made for television, it couldn't have been scripted better. If the exciting leaderboard doesn't increase viewers and ratings, or indeed a more appropriate promotion of ladies golf, rather than that dire Golf Digest cover story, then nothing will. This is as good as it gets folks, get it watched!
