PREVIEW OF MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS' TOURNAMENT
Mothers
and Daughters - Preview
12th
April 2014
FROM JO THESINGER
Mothers
and Daughters partnerships from all over England will congregate at Royal Mid
Surrey Golf Club, in Richmond, on Saturday, to contest a unique foursomes event
in the amateur golfing calendar.
Since
1932 mothers and daughters have been getting together to do battle at this
historic competition; originally played at Ranelagh by the Veterans’ ladies
golfing association, it moved to Royal
Mid Surrey in 1962 when the organisers decided it should become open.
Since
then it has attracted the crème of the amateur games, with some legendary
players competing with their mother or daughter, including Pam Barton, Angela
Uzielli, Vivien Saunders, Jill Thornhill, Linda Bayman, Liz Boatman, Angela
Bonallack and current England International, Alex Peters, to name but a few!!
Last
year, we saw a generational shift as Angela Bonallack, who won the title
herself with her daughter Glenna Beasley in 1979 and 2000, had the pleasure of
watching Glenna claim the title for the first time with her daughter
Harriet! Such is the tradition of this
wonderful event, which is passed down from generation to generation.
Glenna
and Harriet Beasley are back this year to defend the trophy but it will be no
easy task with a very strong field full of past winners to overcome. Hampshire’s Elaine and Charlotte Barrow from
Brokenhurst Manor, will be doing their best to repeat the victory they enjoyed
in 2011, while former pro Christine Griffith with her daughter, Charlotte from
Walton Heath, the winners in 2012 also line up as one of the favourites. However, the Beasley’s most dangerous
challenger may well be 13-year-old Amelia Williamson from Royal Cromer in
Norfolk. The prodigious 6-handicap will
pair up with her mother Tracey, a 2-handicap and experienced Norfolk county
player, which could well be a winning combination.
