ALLENDALE, Michiga Northern Scotland is a long way from West Michigan but following Monday's opening round of the NCAA II championships, they are the only two places on the planet where South Carolina Aiken senior Kyle Godsman has recorded a hole-in-one in competition. Godsman, who hails from Hopeman in Morayshire, Scotland, aced the third hole he played Monday morning at The Meadows, on the campus of Grand Valley State.
Godsman hit a 6-iron into No. 3, which played 167 yards.
“It pitched up about 12 feet short of the flag and rolled up,” said Godsman, who could not see the cup from his vantage point on the tee. “We were not 100 percent sure if it went in or not, but when we got up to the green we couldn't see it anywhere.”
Godsman's only other hole-in-one in competition came, “on a course back home in Scotland, about five years ago. This was a very good time to get my second hole-in-one,” he added.
“The course played tough today, especially when the wind picked up on the back nine.”
A senior for the Pacers, Godsman played an eventful round Monday morning as his scorecard featured two birdies, five bogeys, two double bogeys and the ace. He finished with a 5-over 76.“On this course it's important to hit the fairways and greens,” Godsman said. “If you get off-line at all it's hard to get it back and I missed too many [fairways] today.
“The greens are good and their speed is good too,” he said. “They are running smooth, but some of the pin positions are pretty tough.”
The pin on No. 3 was positioned in the middle left second of the green.
Godsman's was not the only hole-in-one recorded in Monday's opening round of the men's NCAA II golf championships at The Meadows. Barry senior Scott Smyers, a native of Lakeland, Florida, also carded an ace Monday. Smyers' hole-in-one came on No. 13, which played 203 yards
