Lauren Watson, a 16-year-old Deeside junior member, was the surprise leading qualifier for the match-play stages of the Aberdeenshire women's county golf championship at Meldrum House Golf Club, Oldmeldrum this evening
She returned a four-over-par 74, matching the CSS, to finish a shot ahead of defending champion Sammy Leslie (Aberdeen Ladies).
Next week Lauren is one of only two amateurs who has entered the Paul Lawrie Ladies Tartan Tour 36-hole event at Murcar Links so she does not lack confidence.
Meldrum House is a private members' course so, like all the competitors, Watson struggled at times to cope with an unaccustomed challenge. She bogeyed the first two holes but settled to run off a string of pars before dropping further shots at the 10th and 16th. Her only birdie came at the 17th before she bogeyed the last.
Sammy Leslie did not feel she played at all well for a 75 (39-36) and is looking forward to the start of the match-play on Saturday.
Mhairi Johnstone (Murcar Links), whose father Derek, runs Aberdeen schools golf competitions and is a leading official with Northern Golf Club, was the third best qualifier with a 76, a shot ahead of Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne).
