NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's golf team will once again play for collegiate golf's top prize as the Green Wave punched its ticket to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, courtesy of its seventh-place finish at the 2014 NCAA East Regional at the Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Florida
The Tulane team will join 23 other schools and six individuals (who will include Baylor University junior year student Hayley Davis from Winborne, Dorset) in the chase for the team and individual titles at the 2014 NCAA Championships, May 20-23, at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Tulane's "Green Wave" team will make its fifth all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship field, including its fourth in the last six years. Tulane has now made back-to-back showings in 2013 and 2014 and 2009 and 2010 since making its first appearance in 2005. The Wave has advanced out of the East Regional in all five of its NCAA Championship appearances, and is coming off a school-best ninth place finish in last year's national championship in Athens, Georgia
"We entered the season with three goals and that was to win a conference title, return to the national championships and improve on last year's ninth place performance and so far we have accomplished two of those goals," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said.
"We are excited on getting back to the NCAA Championships. We had a solid week of preparation and really put ourselves in a good place during the first round."
"This group really believes in themselves and each other and they have worked extremely hard all season long. Despite our national ranking and our No. 12 seed for the regional, I don't think there was an ounce of doubt in their minds that we belong in the national championship field and they proved that over the last three days.
"That's a testament to them, their mental strength and fortitude," Don added.
Sophomore Emily Penttila was the Green Wave's low player today with a 2-under 70 and completed the event at 3-under for 11th place.
Sophomore Silvia Garces was all even heading into her final hole, but was forced to settle for a double bogey and finished the day 2-over and 6-over for the event for 47th place overall.
Freshman Belen Goicoechea shot 4-over and finished in 55th-place, while sophomore Madison Opfer carded a 5-over 77 today and completed the event in 69th place.
Curtis Cup GB and I team selection and third-year student Gemma Dryburgh (pictured) went to the clubhouse with a 6-over 78, which included a quadruple bogey 8 at one hole, and posted a 36th-place finish.
Gemma's dad John was over at Tallahassee. He told Kirkwoodgolf:
"Gemma's playing great. Putting from 6-12 feet needs to get better but exams finish on Tuesday and she'll be able to focus on golf.
"She caught a really bad break (in the final round) and I have to say its a rule which makes no sense. She played her second shot at the ninth from 190yd into a greenside bunker but the ball disappeared into the sand and none of the players could find it. "The rules say it's deemed a lost ball and she had to go back and play it from the fairway bunker again. She took 8 and it killed her round. It can't be a sensible rule and I would think if you asked any
golfer they would say the same thing.
"That's golf but sometimes you wish there was a way that golfers could have an input to the rules of golf."
Vanderbilt led from wire-to-wire and claimed the regional title, while South Carolina was second, Duke and North Carolina State each tied for third, Stanford was fifth, Virginia was sixth, Tulane was seventh and Campbell posted an eighth place finish. These eight teams will advance to Tulsa for the national championship rounds.
On the individual leaderboard, Vandy's Jenny Hahn claimed individual medalist honours with a three-stroke win over team-mate Kendall Martindale and Baylor's English student Hayley Davis who tied for second place.
