ALICE HEWSON WON CRITCHLEY SALVER AT SUNNINGDALE

This is not a picture of Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) with the Critchley Salver. Scroll down to the foot of the article for that! The 16-year-old moved on from Sunningdale (see report below of her Critchley Salver come-from-behind triumph) to St Andrews at the weekend to win the Lawson Under-18 trophy, help England win the team title and she collected other prizes for fourth place in the St Rule Trophy and another for the best round over the Old Course - a nine-under-par 67!

GREAT SECOND-ROUND 68 WINS

CRITCHLEY SALVER FOR ALICE

England girl international (and GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy player) Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) staged a stunning fightback to win the Critchley Salver by a stroke at Sunningdale last week.
She was lying 23rd after the first round, when she shot five-over par 80 on the New Course. But she came straight back with a six-under 68 on the Old Course, which included two eagles, and she pipped Lincolnshire champion India Clyburn by a shot.
Her father, Dominic, reported: “She was quite despondent after the first 18 holes, but she went out and did a few putting drills from Robbo (Steve Robinson, the head England women’s  coach) to give her back her confidence – and she came out with all guns blazing.

The 16-year-old from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was seven under through 12 holes and, although she bogeyed 16 and 17, she signed off with a two-putt birdie on the long 18th.

Earlier in the round Alice’s highlights included an eagle three on the first, where she chipped in, and an eagle two on the ninth, where she drove the green and holed her putt. She also drove the par four 12th and two-putted for a birdie.

Alice was playing in the event for the first time and her preparations had been interrupted by torrential rain, which meant she could only walk the New Course in practice.

So far this season Alice has been fitting her golf around her AS exam commitments. But, as the Telegraph BMW girls’ champion, she was able to play alongside Paul McGinley in the pro-am which preceded last week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Also in the fourball was Telegraph boys’ winner, Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park), and commentator Andrew Cotter.
“Alice played great,” said Dominic. “She enjoyed her England training immensely throughout the winter and she’d like to thank everyone for how much they have helped her in the off-season and taken her game forward.”

Alice trains with the England Golf Girls' Squad.

Alice is pictured at Sunningdale Golf Club with televison commentator Bruce Critchley who presented the trophy. The salver remembers his mother, British champion and Curtis Cup player, Diana Critchley.
