ALICE HEWSON'S 67 OVER OLD COURSE
ONE SHOT OUTSIDE RECORD
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Berkhamsted's Alice Hewson (pictured) shot a brilliant, 10-birdie round of 67 - nine under par for the Old Course - to post the clubhouse target of seven-under 219 with the second-round St Rule Trophy leaders still out on the course at St Andrews.
Alice birdied the second, third, fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth to reach the turn in six-under 32.
She carried on after the turn to pick up birdies at will - at the 10th, 11th and 13th before she had her only slip of the round, a bogey 5 at the 16th, but she got a birdie 4 at the 17th Road Hole (a par 5 for the ladies) to come home in three-under-par 35.
A three-putt at one hole saw her fail by one stroke to equal the women's amateur course record of 66 for the Old Course, set by Germany's Denise Becker when she finished joint second behind winner Melissa Reid in the 2007 St Rule Trophy
Ireland's Emma O'Driscoll had been the long-time clubhouse leader on 228 a o five-under-par 71.
Emma, a member at Ballybunion, had earlier scores of 75 and 82 over the New Course on Saturday.
Defending champion Ailsa Summers, one of O'Driscoll's playing partners had a 72 for 229, just after 1pm as a southwesterly wind seemed to be freshening and likely to make conditions more difficult for the later starters.
Summers, a St Andrews maths student and Carnoustie Ladies player, knocked herself out of contention with a second-round 84 (nine over par) over the New Course on Saturday. She had played the same circuit in two-under 73 in the first round.
"I didn't feel I played all that badly for an 84. My mistakes were costly ones. I ran up an 8 at the 18th where I was bunkered, then went out of bounds," said Ailsa.
"But I played better today for a 72 (four under par) over the Old Course."
New Scottish champion Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw), like Ailsa Summers a student at St Andrews University, never recovered from an 82 in Saturday's second round over the New Course.
She had another 82 today at the Old Course, her troubles including a 9 at the 13th.
"It took me four shots to get out of a bunker there. So much the same kind of round as I had in Saturday's second round," said Gabrielle whose next big tournament is the British women's amateur at Royal St George's GC, Kent near the end of the month.
Lucy Goddard (Hanbury Manor), recent winner of the Irish women's open amateur stroke-play championship, finished down the field at St Andrews with an aggregate of seven-over-par 233
