GOLF CLUB BIAS AGAINST FEMALE MEMBERS IN UNITED STATES TOO

A view of the Los Angeles Country Club clubhouse, spoiled by the erection of a neighbouring multi-storey office building which, apparently, is now empty!

EDITOR: We tend to think that it's only in the UK that there's a bias by a minority of clubs against female members. The truth is that ladies are second-class members in some American golf clubs too. Read on:

WOMEN CAN'T PLAY BEFORE NOON AT

LOS ANGELES COUNTRY CLUB

Los Angeles Country Club has long been regarded as one of the most steadfastly-private clubs in the U.S.
It has repeatedly denied the USGA's overtures to host a US Open, and until the 1990s, there were no Jewish or African-American members.
Kate Upton -- a new golfer herself and a Golf Digest cover subject last year -- looked to find out about LACC's customs for the first time on Wednesday, and she wasn't too pleased. She tweeted that it was the "most insulting news I've ever heard."

I just heard that Los Angeles Country Club doesn't allow women to golf until noon. That is the most insulting news I've heard! It's 2014

Cowboy movies' star Randolph Scott was rejected as a member because he was an actor

Randolph Scott, a leading man in 1940s' movies, mainly cowboy films,  applied for membership of Los Angeles Country Club and was turned down as the club did not accept actors. To which Scott replied along the lines of " I have 50 movies proving I'm not an actor". He was then accepted as a member.
The course at Beverly Hills played host to the Los Angeles Open (now known as the Northern Trust Open) in 1926, 1934, 1935, 1936, and 1940.

MEANWHILE, in front of the R and A headquarters at St Andrews on Sunday....
RandA chief executive Peter Dawson presented the prizes for the first time at the St Rule Trophy women's tournament. He is pictured with the winner, Carnoustie's Jess Meek.
Could it be a coincidence that the RandA members will be voting later this year on whether or not to
admit female members?
