BECOMING WORLD NUMBER ONE

FROM THE LPGA TOUR WEBSITE
World No. 2 Stacy Lewis has put herself in perfect position to win the ShopRite LPGA Classic atg the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, New Jersey today - and to have a chance at taking over the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
The American, winner of the Ricoh Women's British Open title at St Andrews last summer,  shot the low round of the day with a bogey-free 8-under 63 in gusty conditions.
She tied the 36-hole course and tournament record with a two-day total of  12-under 130.
Fellow American and two-time LPGA Tour winner Christina Kim (64-67 for 131) trails Lewis by one shot. First-round leader Jennifer Johnson (62-70 for 132) sits in solo third, two shots back.
Lewis will be eyeing up her 10th career victory and second win in her last four starts. She won the event two years ago in 2012 and would become the fourth multi winner of the event.
“I got off to a better start. The first nine holes on Friday I just was uncomfortable over the ball,” said Lewis.
“Alignment was kind of messed up the last few rounds, and started to figure it out throughout the first round, and it definitely felt a lot better on Saturday.
"Hit a ball a lot more solid, didn’t have to make as many par putts, and it was just a lot easier overall.
"My tendencies are for my feet to get closed.  I do it all the time, and you wish you could figure out some way to not do it because I feel like I’m going to hook the ball a lot.” Christina Kim kept herself in contention after a round of 67 on Saturday and trails the lead by just one shot. She had five birdies and a bogey in the second round. The California native’s last win came in 2005, her third season on Tour, at The Mitchell Company Tournament of Champions.
“The scores are finally starting to add up,” said Kim. “I was playing well last year but things just didn’t. I was still injured and I was having a lot of compensatory movements throughout my swing, and I just really got healthy and tightened it all up in the last seven or eight months or so.
"So it’s just been a work in progress, and I’ve just been steadily waiting patiently for things to start falling into place.”
First-round leader Jennifer Johnson followed up her career-low round of 62 on Friday with a 1-under 70 today and sits two shots off the lead. She said the windy conditions started playing a factor on her back nine.
“My back nine was definitely windier than when we started,” said Johnson. “Those holes out by the water, there’s nothing to protect you from the wind, so it’s going to be pretty tough I think… when you shoot your lowest round ever, it’s hard to follow that up. Everything went my way on Friday  and nothing was dropping today.”
