BOYD KNOWS ST ENODOC COURSE WELL

Issued 8th July, 2014       Sarah-Jane in home defence of English title Cornwall’s Sarah-Jane Boyd will defend the English women’s amateur championship in her home county next week when the event is played at St Enodoc Golf Club from July 15-17. “I’ll be staying at home, which will be a change!” she commented. “I’m looking forward to it, there’s a very good quality field and I’ll give it my best shot.” Sarah-Jane (image © Leaderboard Photography) will be well-prepared. St Enodoc gave her a year’s membership when she became English champion and she’s got to know the course well.  “I do love playing the course, but they’ve set it up pretty tough and the rough is really deep,” she added. The 22-year-old from Truro will be joined in the field by over 110 leading players from across the country.  They include England’s newest champion, who also hails from Cornwall: Sammie Giles from St Mellion won the mid-amateur title at the weekend, beating Sarah-Jane in the final. Among the other prominent Cornwall players taking on the St Enodoc challenge are county captain Jan Harrison (Launceston), county champion Emily Toy (Carlyon Bay), Eugenie Knight (Carlyon Bay), Georgia Price (Bude & North Cornwall), Elizabeth Bird (Falmouth), and former Curtis Cup player Lynda Simpson (Trevose). Three members of this year’s Curtis Cup team will be among the challengers for the title: Gabriella Cowley (Hanbury Manor), Bronte Law (Bramhall) and Georgia Hall (Parkstone), a past winner of the British ladies’ and girls’ titles – and the 2012 runner-up in this championship. Other key contenders will include Hayley Davis (Ferndown), who won this title in 2010 at her first attempt at the age of 17, and fellow internationals Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough) and Elizabeth Mallett (Wishaw). The leading girl players in the championship include three who are representing England in this week’s European team championship: English girls’ champion Sophie Keech (Parkstone), Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) and Inci Mehmet (Wentworth). There will be three pairs of sisters in the event. Victoria Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies) who joins older sister Elizabeth; Lianna and Annabel Bailey, who are both from Notts Ladies; and the Roehampton pair of Sammy and Annabell Fuller. Annabell, who plays off seven, is just 12 years old. The championship is played over 72 holes with the full field playing 18 holes on each of Tuesday and Wednesday, 15 and 16 July.  The leading 32 players and ties will play the final 36 holes on Thursday, 17 July.
