NEW POWFOOT MEMBER MASTERS GULLANE 1 AT FIRST ATTEMPT
LANCASHIRE'S GEMMA BATTY WINS
MACKIE BOWL BY SIX STROKES
Lancashire lass Gemma Batty, a scratch golfer at Fairhaven Golf Club and now also Powfoot Golf Club, is the surprise winner of the Mackie Bowl SLGA 36-hole Order of Merit tournament over the Gullane No 1 course today.
Gemma, who is 20, moved to Powfoot on the Solway Firth about three weeks ago. Since then she has lost to Rachel Walker in high quality Dumfries-shire county final.
Now she has won the Mackie Bowl with rounds of 72 and 73 for an aggregate of three-under-par 145 which gave her a six-stroke winning margin over Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies), the former Scottish U18 girls match-play champion.
Lesley had scores of 73 and 78.
Third was Clara Young (North Berwick) with152 (78-74).
Gemma's family have been going to North Berwick on holiday for years and she knows the courses in the area well, but, prior to today, had only played Gullane No 2 and No 3, not No 1, which makes her victory all the more praiseworthy.
