It was a day of shock results in the Scottish Under-18 (close) championship today at Dumfries and County Golf Club.
First, top seed Clara Young (North Berwick) was beaten by Claire Robertson (Carnoustie Ladies) - scroll down for a report of the morning play - and then came an even bigger form book upset in the quarter-finals.
Connie Jaffray (Troon Ladies), the defending champion, finalist in the recent Scottish women's championship and No 67 in the World Rankings, was knocked out by Mirren Fraser (Powfoot) - who does not figure on the rankings at all!
Mirren, sixth of the 16 match-play qualifiers, won by one hole, and now plays the new favourite for the title - GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy player, Germany-based son of club professional, Fiona Liddell (Gutersloh).
The other semi-final will feature Joanne Gree (Gullane) who cut the morning giant-killer, Claire Robertson, down to size with a one-hole victory, against Heather Munro (Monifieth), who came out on top by two holes after being three down on the 12th tee to Scottish schoolgirls champion Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne).
The final of the second match-play flight for the Ansley Reid Salver will be contested by Jennifer Saxton (Kinross) and Jillian Farrell (Cardross).
Farrell had a notable 3 and 2 win in the semi-finals against Nicola Callander (Mill Green), winner of the Scottish Under-21 title at Blairgowrie two years ago.

 RECAP ON MORNING PLAY

CLAIRE ROBERTSON KOs TOP SEED

CLARA YOUNG IN FIRST ROUND

Clara Young (North Berwick), top seed for the Scottish Under-18 girls (close) championship, was beaten in her first match-play tie by the last of the 16 match-play qualifiers, Claire Robertson (Carnoustie Ladies), at Dumfries and County Golf Club this morning.

Robertson, pictured right, gave herself a massive confidence boost by winning the first two holes and being three up at the turn after winning the ninth.
Young looked as if she might be turning the tables when she birdied the 12th to get her deficit back to two. Then the North Berwick player won the 16th to be only one down.
But that was as far as it got for Clara. She had a double bogey at the 17th which Robertson won with a bogey to win the tie 2 and 1 and set up a quarter-final match against Joanne Free (Gullane), a 5 and 4 winner against Emma Hale (Troon Ladies), winner of the Clark Rosebowl at the Scottish women's championship at Prestwick in May.

Molly Stewart (Murcar Links), pictured left, the 14th qualifier, gave the favourite, Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) a run for her money before losing by 3 and 2.
Connie, beaten finalist in the Scottish women's championship, was three up at the turn but Molly birdied the 10th and 11th to be only one down.
Jaffrey went two up at the 15th and then won the 16th for a 3 and 2 passage into the last eight in which she will play Mirren Fraser (Powfoot), 4 and 3 winner over Danielle Ker (Roxburghe).
Scottish schoolgirls champion Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) won by two holes against Ellie Bryce (Strathaven) and now players Scottish international team-mate Heather Munro (Monifieth)
Heather won by 6 and 4 in the morning against Emily Dalgetty (Glencorse).
No 2 seed Fiona Liddell, whose father is a club professional in Germany, was the first-round's biggest winner. She beat Molly Richmond (Strathaven) by 7 and 6 and now players Charlotte Munro (Gullane) who had a very good one hole win over Hazel MacGrarvie (Ladies Troon).
In the Ansley Reid Salver second match-play flight Nicola Callander (Mill Green), winner of the Scottish Under-21 title at Blairgowrie two years ago, had a ding-dong battle with Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead) before winning at the 19th hole.
The Anglo-Scot was two down to the Aberdeen player after 11 holes, Jasmine having birdied the fifth, eighth and 11th.
Mackintosh was still two up after 16 holes but bogeyed the next three holes - the 17th, 18th and 19th - to hand Callander, daughter of golf writer Colin Callander, a ticket to a semi-final match against Jillian Farrell (Cardross).
