Slater and Teoh Wiyang Claim Loretto U14

Wins at Bothwell Castle

SUMMARY FROM SLGA WEBSITE
England’s Natasha Slater and Bryan Teoh Wiyang of Malaysia today came out on top with fine performances at the Loretto Scottish Boys and Girls Under-14s Open Championship at breezy Bothwell Castle.
Slater certainly had little trouble handling the conditions, finishing as the only player in the event under par (two under) to take the girls’ title, with Teoh Wiyang posting a three-over-par total in the boys’ section.
A quality 84-player international field lined up in the 36-hole strokeplay event, representing a host of countries, including the home nations, France, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Bulgaria.
Slater, from Furness Golf Club in Cumbria, claimed her biggest success in the game to date, finishing seven strokes clear of compatriot Martha Lewis (St George’s Hill) and Katharina Steffl from Austria. Kirsty Brodie of Strathmore was the best-placed Scottish girl in a share of sixth spot.
“It’s my biggest win so far,” said Slater, 14, who represents England Golf’s Under-16 North Squad. “It’s a nice course and to score rounds of 70 and 72 is pleasing, especially in the wind. I managed to keep things steady.”
Teoh Wiyang, meanwhile, scored rounds of 68 and 75 for his two-shot win over another English player, Charlie Hilton (Ifield). Alex Simpson (Strathmore) and Rowan Carey (Auchterarder) shared 13th place as top Scots.
The 13-year-old winner has been visiting Scotland for the second time with his parents, having played in a kids event at Kilspindie in 2009. Teoh Wiyang has also played in a number of English events this summer and the youngest member of the Malaysian Golf Association is pleased at the learning experience he has enjoyed.
“It’s been a wonderful trip, I’ve learned so much and enjoyed great experience,” said the yougster, who hails from Penang, Malaysia. “I’ve had to learn to control the ball, especially in Scotland with the wind and it’s been good for my game to have a change.”
First contested in 2001, the event is the youngest national age group championship in Scotland. The championship has been greatly supported by the Loretto School Golf Academy who have been sponsors since 2004 and attracts talented young golfers from across the UK and beyond.
Amateur champion Bradley Neil, now ranked inside the top 10 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, won back-back titles in 2009-10
