FORMER CHAMPION MARILYN 

HENDERSON BEATEN IN FIRST TIE

The defeat of former title winner Marilyn Henderson (Ireland) was the only real surprise in the opening round of match-play ties today in the Strathtyrum Trophy women's tournament at St Andrews.
Marlyn lost by 2 and 1 to Zoe Ridgway (Tytherington) whose next opponent is Angus county champion Ann Ramsay, a 6 and 5 winner over Kaylee de Jonge from the Netherlands.
Top seed Elizabeth Sweetnam (Woburn) won by 4 and 3 against Ireland's Margaret McAuliffe.
Karen Marshall (Baberton), who has won the tournament six times, was a 6 and 4 winner against Heather Kitson (Cranleigh) and now plays Christine Appleby (St Annes Old Links).
