FORMER HELEN HOLM WINNER LEADS BY FOUR

AILSA SUMMERS LEADING SCOT IN

SOUTH WALES - 10 BEHIND LEADER

"Helen Holm" winner in 2012, Olivia Winning (Rotherham) produced a brilliant round to
reduce the testing Ashburnham links to only 67 strokes - seven under the women's par in today's first round of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at the Burry Port, South Wales links venue.
She had eight birdies - at the second, fifth, ninth, 10th, 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th - in halves of 36 and 31. Her only blemish was a bogey at the third.
Winning, a student at Tulane University, New Orleans (the same college as Gemma Dryburgh), leads by four shots from Wales' Becky Harries and Ireland's Jean O'Driscoll.
But, Olivia Winning apart, most of the competitors, including the six Scots in the field, struggled to get anywhere near the par of 74.
Carnoustie's Ailsa Summers (pictured) was the top Scot in joint 19th place with a 77 (38-39), including a double bogey 6 at the 12th.
Scottish champion Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) had a double bogey 5 at the short sixth on her way to a 79 (42-37) and a share of 32nd place
Aboyne's Kimberley Beveridge had three birdies but also a double bogey 6 at the short 16th in an 80 (41-39) which tied her for 40th place.
Tara Mactaggart (Mintro) had an 82 (42-40) for joint 56th place.
Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) and Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) both had 83s to share 62nd place overnight in the field of 84.
Hannah had three double bogeys in halves of 42-41 while Kate had a triple bogey 7 at the 17th and a double bogey 5 at the short first.
Only the leading 40 and ties after the second round will beat the cut.
