AUSSIE MAKES DEBUT IN EVIAN CHAMPIONSHIP
MINJEE LEE TURNS PROFESSIONAL
NEWS RELEASE
Rising golf superstar Minjee Lee has turned professional a day after leading Australia to a sensational comeback victory in the women's world amateur team championship.
Eighteen-year-old world No.1 female amateur Lee announced on Sunday she will tee up as a pro for the first time in the year's final women's major, the Evian Championship, in France this week.
Lee made the announcement in a light-hearted video with Fremantle Dockers club captain Matthew Pavlich - a ploy borrowed from New Zealand teenage ace Lydia Ko who made a video announcement with All Blacks fullback Israel Dagg when she turned pro earlier this year.
There was little left for Lee to achieve in amateur ranks after she shot a seven-under-par 65 and team-mate Su Oh a 66 as Australia came from seven shots back to win the Espirito Santo Trophy by two strokes from Canada in Japan on Saturday.
Lee is already at No.80 on the women's professional rankings.
She has won back to back Australian amateur titles and also beat the pros to win the Victorian Open early this year before being the leading amateur at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in California in April - her first start in a major championship.
"I'm excited about making the move to the pro ranks and everything that comes with that," Lee said.
"I have really enjoyed my amateur career. I've had great experiences both here in Australia and overseas and I've been very fortunate to have a lot of support services and resources from Golf Australia and have had additional help from Golf WA and Royal Fremantle over that journey.
"Together with my family, friends and my coach Ritchie Smith, we have put in so much work in recent years to get to this point and after having a taste of tour life this year, I'm looking forward to getting started."
+Queensland-based Scottish-born teenager Karis Davidson will moved up to No 2 in the Australian women's amateur rankings with Lee's announcement.
