SENIOR BRITISH WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CH/SHIP AT ROYAL DORNOCH

HELEN LOWE HITS THE HIGH SPOTS

FROM THE LGU WEBSITE
Helen Lowe's flying start - three birdies in the first seven holes with no dropped shots - positioned her well for an early lead at Royal Dornoch in the first round of the Senior British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at its most northerly venue.
A further three birdies on the back nine, with her only blemish a bogey 6 on 14, puts her in pole position with a five-under-par round of 71.
Amanda Mayne of Saltford, and two Spanish players, Maria de Orueta and Maria Castillo, lie two  shots behind, while well in the mix are the last three champions, Anne Lewis (Royal St David's), Felicity Christine (Woking) and Katherine Russell (Royal Ashdown Forest), all on level par.
Local interest is kept alive by Mary Smith of nearby Tain Golf Club with a 77, while Patricia Cornett, the American Curtis Cup captain at the Nairn match in 2012 and an honorary member at that club, is a shot further back.
Irish senior international Mary Maclaren, whose daughter Meghan won the British Open Stroke Play title last month, is also in the field, and hoping to emulate Meghan's late charge through the field to take her crown.
Second-round play starts Wednesday morning at 8.30am, with the leaders playing last at 14.23.

All welcome to come and watch.
