DAILY TELEGRAPH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS' GRAND FINAL ON ALGARV3E

INDIA CLYBURN SETS RECORD 69

PACE  AT QUINTA DO LAGO

Lincolnshire’s India Clyburn, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, produced a brilliant course record 69 on the redesigned and newly-opened North Course to head a strong nine-girl field by five shots on the opening day at the Telegraph BMW Junior Championships at Quinta do Lago on Portugal's southern Algarve coastline. The reigning English girls champion’s three-under par score was bogey free, while her three birdies were made up of two six-footers and a fine 30-foot putt.Clyburn is sister of current ladies tour professional, Holly, who played in the 2009 Telegraph Championships.Afterwards, India - named after the daughter of Earl Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India -  paid tribute to her sister, who she trains and practises with at her local club, Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf. “This has been my best golfing year and I played really well again today,” said Cleethorpes-based Clyburn, who celebrated her 18th birthday on Tuesday. “Since I’ve trained with my sister my game has really come on this summer."The straight-hitting Clyburn has a healthy lead ahead of Thursday’s penultimate round. Surrey’s Elizabeth Prior sits second after an opening 74, with Lily Downs a stroke further back. There was nearly another course record in the 12-strong boys’ event. Rhys Nevin-Wharton shot a fine 68 to secure a two-shot lead over Vitor Lopes, the sponsors’ invite and Portugal’s number one. The Cheshire golfer was level through nine, before carding four back nine birdies.“I knew that I could shoot a low score here as my form has been good,” said Nevin-Wharton, who earned an England under-18 place this summer.Millfield School’s Jamie Li finished the first round in third, four shots off the pace while Ashton Turner, the defending champion, finished six strokes back, feeling the effects of a tendon injury he picked up two weeks ago.Meanwhile, Lincolnshire’s Hugo Kedzlie, the Telegraph’s youngest-ever finalist, was lying at two-under through 13 holes. However, a double bogey and bogey in consecutive holes scuppered his chances before he finished with a closing birdie. “I deserved more,” said the Spalding member. For more details about the 2014 Telegraph BMW Golf Championship, visit www.telegraph.co.uk/juniorgolf
