Karis Davidson, a 16-year-old Innerleithen-born Scottish girl who emigrated with her parents to Queensland in 2007 and has risen to be the No 2 ranked female amateur golfer in Australia, has ruled out the possibility of playing for Great Britain and Ireland in future international matches, including the 2016 Curtis Cup match in Ireland.
Fay Davidson, Karis's mum, told Clare Queen, the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association performance co-ordinator, this
week:
"I have discussed it with Karis and as much as it's a really
nice idea to play for Great Britain, Karis would choose to play for Australia as her future lies over
here.
"Australia is our home country and has been for the last seven years.
Karis is heavily involved with Golf Queensland and Golf Australia and is hoping
to get picked for the national squad next year."
Karis is No 65 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, the highest Scottish-born player and the third best British player with only England's Annabel Dimmock (No 15) and Bronte Law (No 21) ahead of her.
Leading
eligible players in the WAGR will be automatic selections for the Great
Britain and Ireland teams for the Astor Trophy (team match-play in
Australia in January), the Vagliano Trophy match in Belfast next June
and the 2016 Curtis Cup match in Ireland.
Born
a Scot and not yet having played for the Australian women's
international team, Karis would have been eligible for selection to the GB
and I team.
Earlier this year Miss Davidson reached the final of the Australian women's amateur championship. She lost to Minjee Lee, who was the world's no 1 female amateur at the time, having since turned professional.
