Propelled by an individual title-winning effort  from Musselburgh's Greg Smail and a tied third finish by North Berwick's Calum Hill’s, the University of Louisiana-Monroe men’s golf team had its most impressive performance through two tournaments this season, topping Cincinnati, Austin Peay State and 12 other schools during a second place showing at the Cardinal Intercollegiate over the University of Louisville's golf course at the Cardinal Club (par 72, yardage: 7,036).
A team score of 291 during Tuesday’s final round  placed the Warhawks at a score of 871 (+7) for the tournament, only one shot behind the title winners, Louisville, in a field of 16 teams.
Cincinnati ( 877) were third.
“Greg was outstanding today to come from behind and clinch his first collegiate win,” head coach Walt Williams said.
“Calum had another great showing throughout the event, reflecting his consistent play early on in the season.”
Behind a final round of 69 (-3), Smail was able to come from fifth place to capture the first intercollegiate victory of his career. The third-year student got better as each round progressed going from a score of 72 to 70 to 69 for five-under-par 211.
Hill tied for third place to complete his second-straight top-five finish of the young season. The second-year student  wrapped up a pair of 71s (-1) on Monday with a 73 (+1) to shoot one-under-par 215.
