CHARLEY HULL TAKES FIRST-ROUND 

 LEAD AT WINDY SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN


SAN LAMEER, KwaZulu-Natal – England’s Charley Hull completed a first round of four under par 68 in high winds and driving rain on Friday morning to take the outright lead at the Cell C South African Women’s Open at San Lameer Country Club in KwaZulu-Natal.

Hull resumed her first round from the second hole, playing as her 11^th, at 6.30am on Friday after Thursday’s play was abandoned due to a waterlogged golf course and unplayable conditions.

Tied for the lead on three-under-par overnight, the 18-year-old from Northamptonshire birdied the par-4 third hole to move one clear of the field and then bogeyed the fourth, but recovered with a birdie on the sixth and then held steady with pars over the closing three holes in winds gusting up to 70 kilometres per hour.

Hull said: “It was very windy out there today and it was hard to stand up on some tee shots on the hills. The rain came down, but I definitely think we had the hardest of the conditions, so I think four under is a good score and we’ll keep on steady this afternoon and hopefully we’ll see what’s leading by the end of the day.”

When Hull finished her first round at 8.45 local time, she had half an hour to grab a quick breakfast before teeing off for her second round at 9.14am.

Of the other players in the first round afternoon draw, South African Melissa Eaton was the best placed on two under par 70, with Lee-Anne Pace on one under par 71. South African Connie Chen, Norwegian Caroline Martens and Scotland’s Sally Watson were on one over par 73.
