SCOT DOES WELL AGAIN ON US COLLEGE CIRCUIT
CONNIE JAFFREY TIES FOR FIFTH
PLACE IN LATEST TOURNAMENT
DENVER, Colo. - Individual champion Olivia Eliasson
led four K-State players in the top 10 as the women's golf team
triumphed Sunday at the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate for its second
team title of the season.
The Wildcats carded a 13-over par 877,
including a third-round score of 6-over par 294 on Sunday, at Highlands
Ranch Golf Club as they pulled away from in-state rival Kansas for the
second time this season as they also won the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower
Invitational last month in Lawrence.
Eliasson, who captured first place by carding a 3-under par 213,
shot a third-round score of 2-under par 70 en route to the victory. It
was her first top-five finish of the season and first individual
championship of her career. The Bjarred, Sweden, native teamed with Carly Ragains
as the only two golfers under par in round three. Ragains finished the
tournament in seventh place at 5-over par 221, including a 1-under par
71 on Sunday.
"I am very proud of the team," K-State head coach Kristi Knight
said. "Olivia and Carly played awesome today. They were both under par
today and were playing some good golf. I am very happy for Olivia. She
continues to improve her game and I know how important this win is for
her."
The two wins for the Wildcats this season are the most since also
winning two events in 2003-04 at the Sunflower Invitational
(10/13-14/03) and the Texas A&M "Mo" Morial (3/1-2/04).
Freshman Connie Jaffrey from Kilwinning, already a winner in America,
joined Eliasson in the top five as she tied for fifth. Jaffrey carded a
3-over par 219, which included a 2-under par 70 in round one. Madison Talley tied for ninth by shooting an 8-over par 224, while Katherine Gravel-Coursol and Scotland Preston -- who played as an individual -- tied for 21st at 13-over par 229.
Kansas finished in second place, seven shots back of the Wildcats,
at 20-over par 844. The Jayhawks were led by Yupaporn Kawipakorn and
Pornvipa Sakdee, who finished second and third, respectively.
K-State will be back in action in two weeks, Oct. 26-28, as the
Wildcats close out the fall season in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, for
the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Golf Course.
