Annika Sorenstam has been voted the best Swedish female athlete in history, and the fourth overall, in daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter’s list of the 150 leading athletes.
Sorenstam won 72 times on the LPGA circuit, including 10 majors, the last in 2006. She retired in 2008 and now has two young children with her husband, Mike.
“I’m very happy,” Sorenstam, now 44, said in a Swedish publication. “It is a great honour to receive such a distinction. A top Christmas present.”
The top three on the list were tennis player Bjorn Borg, soccer player Zlatan Ibrahimovic and table-tennis player Jan-Ove Waldner, respectively.
“I think it is great to come in fourth place,” Sorenstam said. “Sweden has so many talented athletes, both male and female.”
Apparently, Ibrahimovic didn’t like his No. 2 rank. He said in an interview afterward, “Thank you, but to finish second is like finishing last. On that list I would have been No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, with due respect to the others.”
Sure, pal.
