Cheyenne Woods, pictured above, opened strongly with a four-under-par 68 on Wednesday in the first round of the LPGA’s final stage of Qualifying School at Daytona Beach, Florida
While her famous uncle, Tiger, will make his return from injury 90 minutes away at the Hero World Challenge in Windermere on Thursday, Cheyenne got a head start putting up a score.
She’s tied for fifth at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, two shots behind Casey Grice, a University of North Carolina graduate who played the Symetra Tour as a rookie this past year.
Woods, 24, broke through to claim her first professional title earlier this year, winning the Australian Ladies Masters on the Ladies European Tour. She played the Symetra Tour this season and is making her third attempt to get through LPGA Q-School.
Ryann O’Toole, a member of the U.S. Solheim Cup team in 2011, opened with a 67. She’s tied for second with South Korea’s Ju Young Park and Spain’s Maria Hernandez.
England’s Charley Hull, ranked No 37 in the world and who helped the Europeans upset the Americans at the Solheim Cup last year, struggled to a 75 and is tied for 105th.
Top British player is Musselburgh's former Curtis Cup player Vikki Laing who is T24 with a 71.
Australia’s Minjee Lee, the top women’s amateur in the world before turning pro in September, opened with a 72 and is tied for 46th. So is Northern Ireland’s former Curtis Cup player and past British amateur champion Stephanie Meadow, who finished third at the U.S. Women’s Open in her first start as a pro earlier this summer.
South Korea’s Ha Na Jang, who is the highest ranked player in the field at No. 25 in the Rolex Women’s World Rankings, opened with a 74. She was the South Korean LPGA Tour’s leading money winner last year. Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn opened with a 73.
Olivia Jordan-Higgins, a Symetra Tour playr from Jersey in the Channel Islands, finished the opening day in 153rd place of a field of 154. She had a disastrous round of 10-over-par 82.
The top 20 after Sunday’s conclusion of play will win full LPGA status for next year. The next 25 will earn conditional status.
