GEMMA DRYBURGH FINISHES SECOND AGAIN

IN SOUTH AMERICA AFTER BOGEYS AT 16-17-18

Aberdeen-born Curtis Cup player Gemma Dryburgh has finished runner-up in the South American women's amateur championship for the second year in a row.
Last year, the Tulane University, New Orleans student was pipped by
a birdie at the last hole from winner Lucia Gutierrez (Peru).
In this year's 72-hole event at Lima, Peru, Gemma finished ahead of Gutierrez but bogeyed the last three holes in finishing with a five-over-par 77 for an aggregate of seven-over 295.

Dryburgh three-putted the 16th which was her first three putt all week and did the same again at 17! The 18th was probable the hardest hole on the course and she didn’t get a good drive away.

Said her father John "I think she just ran out of steam. She had to go to hospital on Wednesday night and was diagnosed with a viral infection and was taking drugs to counteract it.

"However, she was level with the winner teeing off from the last, same as last year, and same as last year the winner came from the group ahead."
The 21-year-old Scot, who expects to turn pro after graduating from Tulane University in May, thus finished in a four-way tie for second place with Ireland's Maria Dunne, Maria Fassi (Mexico) and Milagros Chaves (Parquay), all of them one stroke behind the 2015 champion, Paraguay's 16-year-old Sofia Garcia who came out of the blue with a third-round, eight-birdie  66 and signed off with a 77 for 294.
Maria Dunne closed with a 75 after taking 40 shots to the turn.
Dryburgh had birdies at the third and 10th in her final round which was easily the poorest of her four efforts. But she bogeyed the short fourth, the short seventh, the ninth, the short 11th, the short 13th, the 16th, long 17th and 18th in halves of 38-39.
Carnoustie's Jess Meek, a student at the University of Missouri, finished 16th with a 75 for 305. Her final round included birdies at two par-5 holes, the second and 17th but she had a double bogey 5 at the short 13th and also bogeyed the third, seventh and 18th.
Ireland's Paula Grant had a disappointing final round of 79 for 308 and a joint 18th place finish. She had a double bogey 6 at the 15th and six bogeys. Her only birdie of the day came at the long 17th.
Defending champion Gutierrez finished tied 11th on 302 after a final round of 82.
