KARIS DAVIDSON SHARING SECOND
PLACE AT LAKE MACQUARIE
By Colin Farquharson
Karis Davidson, 16-year-old Scot from Innerleithen, has made a solid start to the first big women's amateur golf tournament of the year - the Ladies' Lake Macquarie Championship - at Belmont Golf Club, New South Wales, Australia.
She is sharing second place on two-under-par 71 in a classy field of 53 players, the majority of them with plus handicaps.
Two shots clear with three rounds to go is Aussie +1 handicapper Rebecca Kay (Coolangatta) with a 69.
Karis emigrated with her family from their Tweed Valley home to Queensland eight years ago. Since then Miss Davidson has become the top-ranked Under-18 girl in Australian golf.
And she is the highest-ranked Scottish-born player in the Women's World Amateur Rankings - but she will never play for Great Britain and Ireland or even Scotland for that matter.
She and her mother have made it clear that Karis would rather play for her "new" home country, Australia, in international golf.
So bang goes a potential place in the GB and I team for the Vagliano Trophy match at Malone GC, Belfast this summer and, more importantly, the 2016 Curtis Cup match at Dun Laoghaire, near Dublin.
LEADING FIRST ROUND SCORES
Par 73. Length: 5,361 metres
Players from Australia unless stated
69 Rebecca Kay
71 Karis Davidson, Hannah Green, Shelly Shin, Jaimee Dougan
74 Jenny Lee, Munchen Keh (NZ), Robin Choi, Paige Stubbs.
