OCALA, Florida – Wendy Ward will be one of U.S. Solheim Cup captain Juli Inkster’s assistant captains when the Americans meet Europe in Germany Sept. 18-20, Inkster announced Tuesday at the Coates Golf Championship.
Pat Hurst is the other assistant.
Ward, 41, is a four-time LPGA winner. She played on U.S. Solheim Cup teams in 2002, ’03 and ’05 with the Americans winning in ’02 and ’05. She was 2-8-1 in the matches.
“I think she brings a calmness and a confident attitude to the team,” Inkster said. “The girls love her. That’s the key. She’s got a lot of respect.”
Inkster gave a pretty good clue of what kind of leader she’ll be in Tuesday’s news conference.
“I kind of like a captain that’s maybe a little more warm and fuzzy, maybe will come up and give you a high five, maybe will hug you when things aren’t going right, or sit down and talk to you,” Inkster said.
