Northern Ireland student leads at St Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida– University of Toledo senior Chris Selfridge posted a 2-under 70 for the second consecutive day to grab a one-shot lead at the halfway point of the New Year's Invitational.
Selfridge, who is a native of Northern Ireland, won the North of Ireland Amateur and made it to the round of 32 at the British Amateur in 2014.
First-round leader Kyle Weldon, a senior at Kansas State University, struggled in his second round, shooting an 80 at St. Petersburg Country Club to fall nine shots back of Selfridge.
Michael McGowan, a recent graduate of the North Carolina, shares second place at 141 with Brandon Pierce, a sophomore from LSU in this 72-hole event.
Notable players in the top 10 include 2014 U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang, who after rounds of 74-69 is just three back. In a tie for sixth at 143 is defending champion Sam Horsfield, a 2015 Florida signee.
