ALICE HEWSON and MARIA DUNNE IN SPANISH
QUARTER-FINALS
Only two players from the four home countries - England's Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) and Ireland's Maria Dunne (Skerries) - have made it through to the last eight of the Spanish women's open amateur match-play championship at Seville, writes Colin Farquharson.
No 17 qualifier Alice, pictured with the Lawson Trophy at last summer's St Rule Trophy tournament at St Andrews, won by 5 and 4 in the second round against Sweden's Emma Svensson who had KO'd the top seed, Virginia Elena Carta (Spain), in the morning round.
Hewson now plays Olivia Cowan, who plays out of Germany although she is the daughter of an English club pro from Liverpool in Germany.
Cowan won the recent Portuguese title and is the No 9 seed in this championship. She beat Sophie Lamb by 3 and 2 in the second round.
Maria Dunne, first-round conqueror of Wrexham's Chloe Williams, No 6 seed and Astor Trophy GB and I team player in Australia last month, reached the last eight by beating the 22nd qualifier Kristyna Frydlova (Czech Rep) 2 and 1. Maria was the 27th qualifier for the match-play stages.
Maria, probably the oldest of the quarter-finalists at the age of 30, now plays Sweden's Linnea Strom, the 19th qualifier for a place in the semi-finals.
