Word slowly spread Saturday that a 16-year-old amateur had ended the second round of the Symetra Tour (No 2 women's pro tour in America) season opener in the lead.
Who is Hannah O’Sullivan? She’s among the best junior golfers in Arizona, and now gaining national acclaim.
O’Sullivan produced a second-round 65 at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona, to get to 12 under for two rounds of the Symetra Tour’s Gateway Classic.
She leads Haley Italia by four shots. If O’Sullivan can hang onto that lead on Sunday, she’ll become the youngest player to win a Symetra Tour event, replacing Cristie Kerr, who won the 1995 Ironwood Futures Classic as a 17-year-old.
“I was hitting the ball really well,” said O’Sullivan, who hit 16 of 18 greens and needed only 27 putts on Saturday. “I was hitting some of my approach shots better than yesterday and I was rolling my putter really, really well. I was just really having a lot of fun out there.”
O’Sullivan lives in Paradise Valley, Arizona, but spent most of her childhood in suburban San Francisco
She first made headlines by qualifying for the prestigious San Francisco City Amateur as an 11-year-old in 2010, only to find out she wasn’t eligible to play until age 12.
O’Sullivan qualified for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open. She committed to the University of South Carolina in 2014, and put together a notable summer that included a turn on the victorious U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team at Blairgowrie and a trip to the semi-finals at the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Channel Islander Olivia Jordan Higgins missed the cut by four shots with rounds of 77-74 for 151
