CATRIONA CLIMBS INTO THAILAND TOP TEN
Catriona Matthew climbed up to joint seventh place finish with a second-round 66 for 137 - seven shots behind the American leader, Stacy Lewis who had a 64 today for a halfway tally of 130 in the LPGA Thailand tournament at Chonburi.
Lewis began the second round in a three-way tie, but was able to separate herself from that pack with an 8-under-par score. The round gave her a three-shot lead on Amy Yang at Siam Country Club
Lewis, World No. 3, had four consecutive birdies from hole Nos. 4-7, plus four more on the back nine, to get to a two-day total of 14-under 130. She also led at Siam Country Club at the halfway stage in 2013, and finished third.
“Well, it got off to a bit of a slow start, but about midway through the front nine I kind of caught fire with the putter and started hitting some shots close, Lewis said of her round.
“It really was a pretty easy day. I didn’t cause myself too much stress. Hit a ton of greens, which is what have to do on this golf course. Just happy with the day.”
Lewis, who celebrated her 30th birthday on February 17, is looking for her 12th pro career win and first since the 2014 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.
Yang posted five birdies and eagled the par-5 10th in a 66 to get to 11 under overall. She has three top-5 finishes in her last four tournaments, including a runner-up finish to Lydia Ko at last week's Women's Australian Open.
Four players were another three shots back at 8 under: Germany’s Caroline Masson, South Koreans Jenny Shin and Mirim Lee, and Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn.
Jutanugarn nearly won this tournament in 2013, but an ill-timed triple bogey handed Inbee Park the title instead.
Yani Tseng, former World No. 1 and two-time champion in this event, was an overnight leader with Lewis and Brittany Lang but carded 72 to drop to 6 under. Lang shot a 73 to go to 5 under.
