ENGLISH PRO'S DAUGHTER IN SPANISH FINAL
Sunday's final of the Spanish women's open amateur championship will be contested by Olivia Cowan, daughter of a Liverpool-born club pro in Germany, and defending champion Linnea Strom (Sweden), writes Colin Farquharson
Cowan, pictured, was ninth of the 32 match-play qualifiers, Strom 19th at Pineda Golf Club, Seville..
Olivia, educated in Germany and a fluent speaker of the language, plays for Germany in international matches and, winner of the Portuguese women's open amateur title recently, she is a certainty to be chosen to play for the Continent of Europe against GB and I in the Vagliano Trophy match at Malone Golf Club, Belfast in June.
Conqueror of the last surviving English player, Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) by 2 and 1 in the morning quarter-finals, Cowan came back from two down after four holes in her semi-final to beat Spain's No 28 qualifier, Maria Parra, by 3 and 1.
Parra went two up by winning the second and fourth and was still two up at the turn.
Then Cowan, who has an excellent short game, made her move. She squared the match by winning the 10th and 12th, then took the 15th, 16th and 17th for victory.
Linnea Storm, who beat Ireland's Maria Dunne in the morning quarters, reached the final for the second year in a row by beating Maria Lunackova (Czech Republic), the No 15 qualifier in the semi-finals.
Storm lost the third, fourth and sixth to be three down on the seventh tee but she had reduced her deficit to one hole at the turn by winning the seventh and eighth.
On a roll down, the Swedish player squared the match at the 10th, then won the 12th, 13th and 16th for victory.
