CRAIG AND AILSA TAKE INDIVIDUAL HONOURS
IN STUDENT TOUR OPENER AT DUNDONALD
FROM DR ROB MACPHERSON
Craig Howie (Stirling University) and Ailsa Summers (St Andrews University) took the individual honours at the first British Universities golf tour event of 2015 at Dundonald Links.
Despite 30mph winds and severe rain (forcing the abandonment of the second round), the event eventually prospered on the ever-playable Ayrshire links.
In the men’s event, Stirling University’s dominance of recent years slipped a little and, although the winner, Craig Howie, pictured right, from Peebles is one of their established stars, he was pushed hard during the final round by Mike Howard (Edinburgh and Royal Birkdale) and James Rooney (Edge Hill and West Lancashire).
Both got within a shot of Howie at early points of the round, before the Borderer eased away on the back nine to record an impressive victory by six strokes from Howard (78-74 for 152)with rounds of 76-70 for 146 - and to lead Stirling I to the men's team title as well.
In the women’s event, St Andrews University continue to sweep all before them. It was a clean sweep of the team and individual prizes as past winner Ailsa Summers (St Andrews and Carnoustie Ladies), pictured left, overcame the challenge of defending champion Miranda Brain (St Andrews and Gog Magog) and former student tour winner Amy Chambers (St Andrews and Dunfanaghy).
Ailsa shot 84-77 for 161, finishing two ahead of Miranda (84-77) with Amy (91-77) and Nastja Banovec (Abertay Dundee) (85-83) sharing third place on 168.
