CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS' TITLE

Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne), the youngest competitor in the field at 15 years of age, scored an impressive win by four shots in the SLGA Champion of Champions' tournament at Glasgow Gailes Golf Club today, writes Colin Farquharson
The one-round event should have been played last October but was postponed because of bad weather.
Competitors qualified for the Champion of Champions tournament by winning their county, divisional or national champions, winning an order of merit event of being selected to play for Scotland.
Shannon last year won the Aberdeenshire women's and girls' county championships, and also won a play-off for the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish schoolgirls championship at Murrayshall.
She won her first title of 2105 with a very good round of one-over-par 72, five under the CSS, which saw her finish four shots clear of a disappointingly small field of 10 competitors.

Shannon birdied the first, eighth and 18th, offset by bogeys at the  third, sixth, ninth and 11th.

She said later:

"I struck the ball well all the way round but found the greens pretty tough, as they had been cored and top dressed. I'm delighted with my win. It's a fantastic start to my season! Mum says it's the best Mother's Day present ever. "
With the CSS as high as 77, Shannon has had her handicap cut from 1.9 to 1.2.
The clear-cut victory, adding to an impressive CV, makes her a strong tip for a place in the GB and I team of six for the Junior Vagliano Trophy match against their opposite numbers from the Continent of Europe. The age limit for this match is under 16 years on January 1. 

Stirling student Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey), winner of the Exeter University invitational women's title in Cornwall only last week, finished runner-up to McWilliam.
Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) and Stirling student Tara Mactaggart both finished on 77. Kate was officially placed third with a better inward half.
The CSS was 77.
+Scottish champion Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw GC and St Andrews University) is currently hors de combat with a wrist injury which has ruled her out of action for some time.
So that was a good reason for Gabrielle not to play in the SLGA Champion of Champions.
But what about all the county champions, Order of Merit event winners, etc who were eligible to play but didn't. Why does the Champion of Champions' tournament not attract a lot of entries?
