Ireland's Leona Maguire gave a reminder today that she is very much a contender for one of the nine places in the GB and I team for the Vagliano Trophy match at Malone Golf Club, Belfast at the end of June.
Playing in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate over a par 71 course of 6,221yd at Long Cove Club, Hilton Head, South Carolina, Leona, pictured, who hails from Cavan, Ireland and is a member of Slieve Russell Golf Club, shot a six-under 65 with seven birdies and one bogey.
That was an improvement of eight shots on her first-day score and her 36-hole tally of 138 has taken her into the lead with one round to go.
It is Leona's lowest so far in her rookie season on the US college circuit and, by two shots, a tournament record score.
She is one ahead of Scandinavian Madelene Sagstrom (LSU) (71-68 for 139).
World No 1 female amateur Celine Boutier is a team-mate of Leona Maguire at Duke University. The French player is now trailing the lead by eight shots with scores of 74 and 72 for a share of ninth place on 146.
Boutier, by the way, certain to be in the Continent of Europe team for the Vagliano Trophy match - unless she turns pro (unlikely) before then.
Leona's twin Lisa has had a pair of 81s for 162 and is 83rd in a field of 90 players.

GEMMA AND JESSICA LEADING BRITS AT GATOR INVITATIONAL

Scot Gemma Dryburgh (Tulane) and Jessica Carty (Denver) from Rory McIlroy country - Holywood, near Belfast - are the leading Bfrits in the Sun Trust Gator Invitational at Gainesville, Florida.
Gemma has shot a pair of 75s over the par-70 course of 6,002yd while Jessica has hit the same 150 mark with scores of 76-74.
They are tied 14th in a field of 84 players behind new leader Krystal Quihuis (Arizona) who is at three-over 143 with scores of 70-73.
Meghan MacLaren (Florida International) improved by seven shots to be T13 on 153, a shot ahead of Carnoustie's Jess Meek (Missouri) (79-75) and Brogan Townend (Texas-San Antonio) (79-75).
Scot Rachael Taylor, whose father is a club pro in Germany, is T46 on 157 (77-80).
Clara Young (Missouri) from North Berwick has scored 79-81 for 160 and is T58.
Sophie Godley (Florida) from Notts is 79th on 169 with scores of 85-85.
Becky McGeehan (Texas-San Antonio) is 82nd on 176 (90-86)
