North Berwick student Calum Hill scores first USA win

Calum Hill from North Berwick, a second-year student at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, scored his first win on the United States men's college golf circuit in the ULM Wallace Jones Invitational at Black Bear Golf Club, Delhi, Louisiana today (Tuesday), writes Colin Farquharson

The former Merchiston Castle School pupil, PICTURED RIGHT, after a bunch of top-10 finishes to his credit, finally made it first over the winning line with a brilliant burst of birdies for rounds of 69, 70 and 66 for an 11-under-par aggregate of 205 over a longish par-72 course of 7,276yd.
Hill trailed Victor Lange (Louisiana Tech) by two shots after 36 holes but relegated him to second place by covering his last 10 holes in six under par. He had seven birdies in all over his last 12 holes in the tournament, coming home in 31 to pip Lange (67-70-69) by one stroke at the head of a field of 88 players.
Sean Burgess (Oakland University, Michigan), a third-year student from Nairn, finished T16 on 218 with scores of 70, 72 and 76.
Greg Smail from Musselburgh, a third-year team-mate of Hill's at ULM, finished T44 on 226 (77-73-76).
Hill's outstanding performance enabled Louisiana-Monroe to tie with Arkansas-Little Rock on 861 for the team title. Louisiana Tech (867) finished third, Stephen F Austin Stat (873) fourth and Oakland (876) fifth of 15 teams.
