ALEXANDER WILSON jt 11th FINISH IN
QUALITY FINAL AT LAS VEGAS
Alexander Wilson, from Edinburgh and a Loretto School former pupil, pictured below, did well to finish in joint 11th place in a quality field of 81 players at this week's Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters tournament, hosted by the University of Nevada Las Vegas at Southern Highlands Golf Club, Las Vegas, writes Colin Farquharson.
This was a 15-team event and 11 of the teams competing figure in the top 25 in the US College rankings, the remaining four all being in the top 50. It is recognised as the leading tournament in US College golf outside of the NCAA finals.
The standard was very high and the individual title was won by the University of Texas led by Beau Hossler who came to public attention with a wonderful performance in the US Open a couple of years ago.
The individual title was won by Robby Shelton (WAGR no. 11) of the University of Alabama with an excellent15 under par total of 201 on a long and very difficult 7,374yd par 72 course.
Shelton won by the incredible margin of six strokes over one of the strongest college fields of the season.
In Shelton’s 19 career college starts, he has four wins, nine other top-five finishes and no result worse than 17th.
So that's what Alexander Wilson, a second-year student at the University of California-Berkeley, was competing again.
The Scot had three steady rounds of 71 for a three-under-par total of 213.
