Great Britain and Ireland's hopes of wresting the Vagliano Trophy out of the grasp of the Continent of Europe in the June match at Malone Golf Club, Belfast have suffered a body blow with the confirmation by the Ladies Golf Union of the news that Leona Maguire from Cavan, Ireland will not be available for selection.
A freshman student at Duke University in the United States, Leona is the No 1 ranked player on the American women's college golf circuit and is currently leading by two strokes in one of its conference championships.
She is consistently finishing ahead of players who will be in the Continent of Europe team in the Vagliano Trophy, including the Europe No 1 female amateur from France, Duke University teammate Celine Boutier.
The LGU did not provide any particulars about why the Maguire twins, Lisa is also a student at Duke and a former GB and I international, cannot be chosen. The need to study has been given as a reason in recent years when the Maguires have been declared unavailable for selection for GB and I teams.
This year's Vagliano Trophy match is on June 26-27 by which time
the American universities will have broken up for the summer holidays.

Leona, six under par, leads by two at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Duke University freshman Leona Maguire carded a six-under-par ledger through the first 27 holes of action at the ACC Championship Friday and holds a two-stroke lead with 27 holes remaining at the 6,089-yard, par 72 Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro
Maguire, a product of Cavan, Ireland, owns a two-stroke lead over Blue Devil teammate Gurbani Singh on the individual leaderboard.  The No. 1 ranked golfer in the nation, Maguire posted a four-under, 68, in round one and then carded a two-under-par, 33, in the opening nine holes of the second round.  Maguire owns a 27-hole ledger of 101, while Singh sits at four-under, 103.
“Obviously it is a team event, but everything I can do as an individual to help the team is great,” said Maguire.  “I just played pretty solid in general, hit a lot of greens, give myself some chances and had a few putts.  I am pretty happy with my round in general.”
As a team, Duke opened in third place and eight strokes behind Virginia (419), who turned in a nine-under-par clip to open the championship.  Wake Forest (426), Duke (286), North Carolina (428), Florida State (428), Notre Dame (430), Clemson (435), Miami (436), Louisville (437), NC State (442) and Boston College (457) rounded out the field.
“Actually, we played pretty well so hats off to Virginia,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “That was really some great golf.  They were making a lot of putts and hitting some great shots.  We feel good about what we did.  We had three freshmen on the golf course, the first time they have been able to see it.  There is a little learning going on out there.  Sedgefield is in great shape.  We went through a tough winter so the fairways are a little rough, but the greens are fantastic and that is what matters.”
The Blue Devils opened the first round with 286, and 141 opening nine holes of the second round.
Maguire carded an even par ledger through her opening eight holes on the morning, but netted three straight birdies on No. 9-11 to move to three-under for the day.  She hit all nine greens to kick off the day on the front and didn’t miss a green in regulation until No. 14 where she suffered a bogey.

Maguire added back-to-back birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 to get to four-under-par in the first round.  On the 445-yard, par five 15th, Maguire hit her approach shot on the green in two and concluded with a tap-in for birdie.
Maguire added birdies on No. 5 and No. 9 to start the second round and has played her last 22 holes at seven-under-par.  She hit 10 fairways, 16 greens and had 31 putts in round one.  In the second round, Maguire missed the first green, but then hit eight straight.  She hit 7-of-9 fairways and had 15 putts.
Singh added just her third under-par round of the season as she notched a two-under, 70, in round one, before shooting a two-under-par, 33, in the first nine holes of the second round.

A native of New Delhi, India, Singh collected five birdies over her final 10 holes in the first round and then caught fire in the second round notching birdies on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 8 to get to four-under.  Her five birdies in round one was a season-high for Singh.  Singh hit 13 greens, nine fairways and had a team-best 29 putts Friday.
Celine Boutier, the reigning ACC Individual Champion totalled a 73 in round one and was three-over-par in round two when play stopped.  Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, hit 13 fairways, 13 greens and had 31 putts in round one.  She suffered a double-bogey on the second hole during round two when her drive went out of bounds and was forced to use her provisional. Over the 27 holes, she is tied 25th with a four-over, 111.
Sophomore Sandy Choi added a five-over, 112, and is tied 39th, while freshman Lisa Maguire is tied 49th with a 116.  Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, featured a 75 in round one and was two-over through nine holes in the second nine.  She hit 14 greens, 14 fairways and had 35 putts in round one.  Choi was limited to only one birdie on day one, which occurred on the 390-yard, par four No. 6.
Maguire shot 78 on the opening 18 holes and then turned in a 38 in the afternoon.  A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire had seven pars, one bogey and one double-bogey in the second round.
Duke carded 17 birdies in round one, which tied a season high for the Blue Devils.

Leona Maguire has counted all 23 rounds she has competed in as a Blue Devil since enrolling at Duke University last August.
