Strom, Muse and Bowers share lead
on four-under-par 68 at Portland

Linnea Strom from Gothenburg lived up to her World No 3 ranking with a four-under-par opening round of 68 at Troon Portland in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke play today.
Nobody in the field of 105 bettered that but by the end of the day, the 18-year-old blonde Swede, pictured right, had to share the pole position with an in-form youngster, Hollie Muse, from West Lancs, recent winner of the SLGA Scottish U16 girls' open title, and a lesser known player from Prestbury, Cheshire, 21-year-old Jae Bowers.
Strom played in the Junior Ryder Cup match - her second - at Blairgowrie last September so she has made a happy return to the Home of Golf.
Strom had one eagle (at the 15th), five birdies (first, second, 12th, 13th and 16th) and three bogeys (fifth, 10th and 17th) in halves of 35-33.
Muse, pictured left, followed up her Strathmore success by scoring again in her native county at The Leveret women's tournament last week. She is obviously playing the golf of her young life.
Hollie had TWO eagles on her Troon Portland card - at the first and the 15th. She also birdied the fourth, sixth, eighth, 11th and 15th in halves of 32-36.
She bogeyed the seventh, 12th, 13th and also the 18th when a par finish would have given her the outright lead.
It's very unlikely that Jae Bowers has ever shared the lead in a tournament of this magnitude but she stepped into the spotlight late in the day with two halves of 34, including birdies in at the first, third, eighth, 11th and 15th - with only one bogey (at the second).
Eighteen-year-old Inci Mehmet (Royal Mid-Surrey), who comes from Turkish stock, is in fourth place with a 69
Heather Stirling was the last Scottish winner of the "Helen Holm" - in 2002 but three young Scots in the leading eight at the end of the first round is a heartening sign that the next generation of home-grown players will end the drought, if not this year, then maybe within the next two or three.

Not to be outdone by Hollie Muse, Miss MacGarvie also had two eagles, back-to-back 3s at the par-5 11th and 12th.
Earlier Hazel had bogeyed the sixth and double bogeyed the seventh after birdieing the first and fifth. Those eagles more than cancelled out these slips but she dropped one more shot, the 18th.
Scottish schoolgirls champion and winner of the SLGA women's champion of champions tournament earlier this month, Shannon McWilliam from Aboyne, only 15 and Aberdeenshire's youngest ever women's county champion, and Stirling student Jennifer Saxton (Kinross) are sharing sixth place on one-under 71.
McWilliam, pictured left, made the most of a flying start in which she had an eagle 3 at the first and a birdie 3 at the third.
Saxton, after a week playing in the British universities championships at The Duke's, showed no signs of tiredness, grabbing her fifth and sixth birdies of the day at the 17th and 18th.
Olivia Winning (Rotherham), the only previous "Helen Holm" winner in the field - she went off to Tulane University, New Orleans for a spell after her Troon victory in 2013, shot a first-round 77. Her first target on Saturday will be to survive the 36-hole cut.
The leading 66 players and ties at the end of Saturday's second round will go on to the final round over the Open championship links of Royal Troon on Sunday.
The draw for the final round will be displayed on this website as soon as the SLGA send it to us on Saturday evening.
