Top senior women contest national title
The country’s top women seniors will be on parade next week when the first national championship of the year takes place at Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf.
Last season, the England senior women's teams were invincible. They became European champions, they won their Home Internationals, and Cheshire’s Cath Rawthore became British senior champion.
Next week, Rawthore and her fellow internationals will all be in the field when the English senior women’s championship takes place on the Bracken course at Woodhall Spa, from Tuesday to Friday, 5-8 May.
The defending champion is Julie Brown of Staffordshire (image © Leaderboard Photography), who was a winner on the Ladies European Tour during a professional career, and won this title on her senior debut last year.
The other internationals in the field are Hampshire’s Chris Quinn, a past British champion who has held this title four times; Lulu Housman of Middlesex; Amanda Mayne of Somerset; Debbie Richards of Surrey; and Katherine Russell of Sussex.
The host club will be represented by Cindy Ireland, a past Lincolnshire county captain. Other local players are England senior team captain, Pat West of Spalding and fellow club member, Dianne Platt; together with former county player, Helen Lowe of Scraptoft.
Players who will be making their first appearance in this championship include Debbie Warren, a past Staffordshire champion; Clarissa Bushell, who has represented Sussex; and Cheshire’s Hilary Tarleton who paired up with Cath Rawthore to win the PING Fourball Betterball Grand Final of 2010.
All competitors will play 18 holes stroke play on each of the first two days of the championship. The top 16 players will go forward to the championship matchplay and the next 16 will contest the second flight. The finals of both flights will be played on the afternoon of Friday, 8 May.
Scores, news and images will be available on the championship webpage and spectators are very welcome.
