Leona Maguire named Conference Player and 

Freshman of the Year

DURHAM, North Carolina – The All-Atlantic Coast Conference women’s golf team was released Wednesday with Duke freshman Leona Maguire sweeping both the ACC Player and Freshman of the Year, which was voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.   

Maguire and Dule team-mates junior Celine Boutier and sophomore Sandy Choi were also named to the 12-member All-ACC women’s golf team.

Maguire became the fourth golfer in ACC history to be named both Player and Rookie of the Year. The first three were Lindy Duncan (2010), Amanda Blumenherst (2006) and Beth Bauer (1999). 

Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, is currently the top-ranked player  in American women's college golf  She is quietly having a record-breaking season, featuring a 70.68 stroke average, which would be a Duke record.  

Leona Maguire has turned in 19 rounds of even or under par, seven top five finishes and eight top 10 placements on the season.  She has totalled two victories on the year, including the ACC Championship on the second playoff hole. 

The two-time ACC Golfer of the Month enters the NCAA Regionals posting a 69.70 stroke average over her final four tournaments, including five rounds in the 60s out of 10.

Earning All-ACC accolades for the third straight year, Boutier has produced another solid season for the Blue Devils with a 72.41 stroke average.  The 2014 ACC Player of the Year owns two top five, three top 10 and seven top 20 finishes in eight tournaments. 

A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier’s top finishes were at the Annika Invitational and the Tar Heel Invitational where she tied third.  Her 10 rounds of even or under par on the year ranks second on the Duke squad.
