After registering a win at the South Bend Regional, her second straight and third of the college season, Duke University freshman Leona Maguire took over as the No. 1 woman in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Maguire, a 20-year-old out of Cavan, Ireland, took the No. 1 spot from junior golfer Andrea Lee after winning in South Bend and at the ACC Championship. She holds a 1,515 points average in the latest ranking, compared with Lee's 1,487. Lee had previously removed Duke junior Celine Boutier, who is now ranked fifth, from the top spot.
Maguire shot a round in the 60s in five of her past 10 tournaments and is on pace to set the Duke scoring-average record, sitting at 70.68. She is the No. 1 golfer in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, was recently named the ACC Freshman and Player of the year – becoming the fourth player to earn both distinctions in the same season – and is a top candidate for the 2015 ANNIKA Award, which is awarded to the top player in women's college golf.
