Leona Maguire wins ANNIKA Award as top

US women's college circuit player

Ireland's Leona Maguire, 20, has been named the ANNIKA Award recipient, which goes to the top United States collegiate women’s golfer for the year (2014-2015), writes Colin Farquharson .

“That’s another level,” Maguire said. “… It’s an incredible honour to have my name on a trophy that has her name (Annika Sorenstam) on, too.”

Leona recently became No 1 in the Women's World Amateur Rankings.
She is certain to be in the Great Britain and Ireland team of nine to to challenge the Continent of Europe for the Vagliano Trophy at Malone Golf Club, Belfast on June 26-27.
That is a tremendous boost to GB and I's prospects of ending the Continentals' 10-year possession of the biennial trophy.
In 2013 at Chantilly, near Paris, the GB and I team, captained by Tegwen Matthews, lost by a record margin of 9pt: 7.5 to 16.5
The Continent of Europe regained the trophy at Fairmont, St Andrews in 2007 (15-9) and have held it ever since - 2009 at Hamburg (13-11), 20011 at Royal Porthcawl (15.5-8.5) and then at Chantilly in 2013.
Elaine Farquharson-Black, the new home team captain, played in the GB and I team which won the Vagliano Trophy in 1989 (14.5-9.5 at Venice Lido) and again in 1991 (13.5-10.5 at Nairn). Her foursomes partner was Catriona (Lambert) Matthew.
They never lost a foursomes match for Scotland or GB and I.
+The GB and I team for the 2015 Vagliano Trophy match will be announced at 10am on Saturday, May 31. It will be made up of the top four eligible players in the World Rankings plus the top two in the LGU Order of Merit who have not qualified through the World Rankings plus three players chosen by the Ladies Golf Union Selection Panel.
