An agonizing finish for the second-seeded Duke University women's team, the Blue Devils, yesterday afternoon as they lost 3-2 in the semi-finals to third-seeded Baylor University from Texas in the NCAA championship's match-play stages over the Concession Golf Club Course (par 72, 6,468yd) at Bradenton, Florida.
Baylor will play Stanford University, California in the final.
Duke's Lisa Maguire, who is halfway through a major swing change, was a gallant loser, taking the deciding match against Scotland's Lauren Whyte to the 24th hole!
The Blue Devils jumped out to a great start on the afternoon and led all five matches at one point on the front nine, but midway through Baylor started to gain momentum and cut the Duke lead
Duke got on the points board first as sophomore Sandy Choi dominated her match against Giovana Maymon going 4-up through five holes and clinching a 6 and 5 win on hole 13 with a birdie. Duke's former World No 1 female amateur Celine Boutier also never trailed in the top match against Hayley Davis, collecting a 3 and 2 win. It was the Dorset player's first match-play defeat during the 2014-2015 college season.
Gurbani Singh dropped a 2 and 1 decision to Laura Lonardi.
With Duke leading 2-1, it came down to the freshman set of twins, Leona and Lisa Maguire. Leona Maguire led for four straight holes on the front nine against Dylan Kim, but went on to lose two consecutive holes to drop back to all square through eight holes. The match stayed that way until Leona Maguire drained a birdie on the par five 13th. Kim came back to birdie the next hole to get the match back to all square. A birdie by Kim on No. 17 gave her a one-hole lead and Maguireās birdie putt on No. 18 came up short, giving Kim a one-hole win.
Lisa Maguire trailed early, but mounted a comeback, winning holes five, seven and eight to take a two-hole lead over Baylor freshman from St Andrews, Lauren Whyte, pictured below, a former Scottish U18 girls champion.
The match went back to all square through 12 holes and then Maguire went two down after 16 Maguire made a great comeback with hole-winning pars at the 17th and 18th.
Lisa had birdie chances at the early extra holes but they just missed.
Maguire had a great up-and-down from the bunker on the 23rd hole to save par and extend the match.
On their 24th hole, Maguire hit her drive next to the water and ended up with a double-bogey, while Whyte three-putted for bogey which was good enough to win her match and clinch overall victory for Baylor.
Lauren said later: "It was a very special experience. I was very lucky to have the whole Baylor team out there supporting and I was very
lucky to have Jay (Goble, Baylor head coach) on the bag as well to calm the nerves a little bit.
" It was a long day. There was a lot of adrenaline at the end there but I think it's sunk in this has happened and everybody is ready to go for the final and really excited about what can happen."
Stanford followed up a 4-1 quarter-final win over Arizona by beating Southern California 3-2 in the round of the last four.
