European women's team championship hopes look bleak
Mountain to climb for Scots women in
Denmark if they are to make top match-play
Scotland are languishing in joint 15th position after the first qualifying round of the European women's team championship at Helsinger Golf Club, Denmark.
Only the top eight after the second stroke-play round will progress to the championship flight of match-play and it will take an almighty team effort for the Scots (378) to make up the seven stroke leeway between them and the two teams currently sharing eighth place on 371, Germany and the Netherlands.
Only Germany-based US college student Rachael Taylor of the Scottish team of six broke par. She had a very good two-under 70.
Next came Monifieth's Heather Munro on 74.
The Scottish scoreboard was
70 Rachael Taylor
74 Heather Munro
75 Connie Jaffreyham
79 Jess Meek
80 Clara Young
*83 Rachel Walker
* discounted score under best five from six to count daily.
World No 1 female amateur Leona Maguire, coming straight from finishing a close-up second in the Ladies European Masters pro tournament in England, shot a 71, a good score under the circumstances.
Olivia Mehaffey, the other Irish player in the recent GB and I team in the Vagliano Trophy match in Belfast, had a disappointing 77.
Ireland are in ninth place, one stroke behind eighth place Austria.
