Last 16 at Irish Under-18 girls' championship

NEWS RELEASE FROM ILGU

Rain and wind swept in over Galway Bay for the first round of matchplay at the Irish Under-18 Girls Close Championship. The players were presented with typical Irish weather conditions as waterproofs and umbrellas were the weapons of choice as the top 32 commenced play at 9am this morning.

Leading qualifier Julie McCarthy (Forrest Little) is still on track to win the Championship. She overcame Aoife Ní Thuama 4 and 3 to progess to the final 16

Julie was joined in the final 16 by defending champion Annabel Wilson (Lurgan) and internationals Mairead Martin (Killarney), Niamh McSherry (Lurgan) and Valerie Clancy (Killarney). 

Gemma McCarthy (Clonmel) secured an impressive win on the 17th over Leinster Girls Champion Ciara Casey (Hermitage). 

The 16 girls who lost their first round match-play tie today will compete in the Plate tomorrow and Saturday.
