Fiona Liddell retains Scottish U18 title at 20th

after a quality final against Chloe Goadby

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Germany-based Fiona Liddell, daughter of a Scottish-born club professional in that country, has won the Scottish Under-18 girls' championship for the second year in a row.
She had to play 39 holes at Alyth Golf Club, Perthshire today to win first a semi-final against No 4 seed Shannon McWilliam with a birdie at the 19th and then the final with a birdie at the 20th against the No 2 qualifier from St Andrews, Chloe Goadby (St Regulus).
It was a quality final with Liddell two under par for the 20 holes and Goadby one under par.
Liddell led only once in the match - after the 20th!
Goadby had won the short third with a 2 to go one up but Liddell squared it was a birdie 3  at the fifth.
The ninth was halved in birdie 4s at which point the final was all square. They halved the rest of the regulation holes, the 11th and 12th with birdies.
Goadby's birdie putt to win at the 19th lipped out.
At the 20th Liddell hit a magnificent 5 wood approach shot to around 3 feet, and holed it for the match and the title.
Goadby was unlucky in that her one-under-par figures would have won many finals down through the years.
The Ansley Reid Salver handicap match-play competition was won by Ailsa Brannock (Castle Douglas). She beat Megan Ashley (Strathmore) by 3 and 2 in the final.
