The World Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremony was among the highlights of Monday’s start to Open week in St. Andrews. But the ceremony, which began at 6 p.m. local time at the University of St. Andrews, missed out on one very big personality in Laura Davies.
Davies, who was T-47 at the U.S. Women’s Open in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Sunday, had one of those travel plans in place that would work only if zero obstacles presented themselves. Unfortunately, mechanical issues with a plane prevented Davies from getting to Scotland in time for one of her grandest moments.
As a very slight consolation, Davies, at least, had a presence at the ceremony because she already had taped an acceptance speech.
As news of Davies’ bad fortunate spread around Twitter on Monday, her pals spoke up. They lamented Davies’ absence at St. Andrews, and expressed disappointment that more wasn’t done to get her there on time.
"They knew the risk and should have sent a private plane," Meg Mallon told Golfweek. "And put all her mates on, too!"

The World Golf Hall of Fame also issued a statement:
“Laura’s absence from the Hall of Fame induction ceremony is unfortunate. Laura is a competitor and we expected her to play well into the weekend at the U.S. Women’s Open, which she did. As soon as her last putt dropped Sunday, the World Golf Hall of Fame and others onsite made every effort to get Laura to St. Andrews. Unfortunately mechanical issues with her plane and other international travel logistics made it impossible for her to arrive on time.”
+Laura did arrive in time for the reception in a marquee on the St Andrews University campus.
