Wie WDs from Marathon, has new injury
Michelle Wie has withdrawn from this week's LPGA Tour event, the Marathon Classic, citing lingering bursitis in her left hip and now a bone spur in her left foot.
Wie struggled with pain throughout her title defense at last week’s U.S. Women’s Open, ultimately tying for 11th despite playing with a limp that was noticeably worse on Saturday and Sunday.
Wie met with three specialists, including hip and foot specialists, at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio over the last two days. She said she expects to make her return at the Ricoh Women’s British Open in two weeks.
“I’m disappointed to miss one of the LPGA’s best tournaments, but I remain determined to get healthy as I know my best golf is still to come,” Wie said in a statement.
Wie was diagnosed with bursitis in her left hip after withdrawing from the Kingsmill Championship in the middle of May. She’s also struggling with pain in her left knee and left ankle, joints that have endured wear and tear as shock absorbers of her powerful swing. The bone spur in the left foot is a newly diagnosed malady.
Wie met with Dr. James Rosneck (hip specialist), Dr. Alan Davis (foot specialist) and Dr. Thomas Graham (orthopedic surgeon) at the Cleveland Clinic. She required a cortisone shot and two platelet-rich-plasma injections in the six weeks or so leading up to the U.S. Women’s Open.
She told GolfChannel.com before the U.S. Women’s Open that her body needs rest, but she’s amid a busy major championship season.
